How Do I Write a Check?
Like everything else in life, writing a check can seem daunting until you've learned how, and it's not generally something they teach you in school! Here's how you do it:
- Fill in the current date in the top right-hand corner.
- Where it says "Pay to the order of", write the name of the person or business you are paying.
- In the box to the right of the recipient's name, write the amount you are paying in number form (i.e. 100.25 if you are paying $100.25).
- On the next line, write the dollar amount you are paying in words; write the cents as a fraction (i.e. one hundred and 25/100).
- The line in the bottom left-hand corner might say "Memo" or "For". This line is optional, but it is where you can make a note of why you wrote the check. This can be handy for your recordkeeping.
- Sign your name on the line in the bottom right-hand corner.
And that's it! You did it! Be sure to record the check number, date, recipient, and amount in your checkbook register so you can keep your account balanced.
