Selling your home is a big deal. For those who have lived in the same home for most of their lives or who raised their children in that house, it can be an emotionally difficult decision to leave behind those memories and move somewhere else. Yet, sometimes selling your home is the right decision. While there are a variety of reasons that people may decide that it is time to sell their home, here are three things that you may want to consider.
The Size
For many people, their home was the perfect size when they bought it, but their circumstances have changed, and their home's size no longer fits their family's needs. This may include a family expansion. The home that you bought as newlyweds likely won't fit your family's needs once you have three or four children. Marriages that bring in step-children or even having other family members, such as your parents or a sibling, move in with you may require additional space.
There's also the opposite side of the issue. Empty-nester, widows, and widowers, or those who once had their parents or other relatives living with them may find that their home is now too big for them. If you find that your home no longer fits your size needs, it might be time to sell it.
The Commute
If you've recently gotten a job a little farther from home, you may have found that the commute does not feel like it's worth it. Roads that are more congested than when you first moved into your home or simply a frustration with the long commute that you've been making for years may also be reasons that you decide that the commute alone is a great reason to sell your home.
Of course, work is not the only commute that you need to consider when it comes to deciding if it's time to sell your home. For example, some people need to care for their aging parents. If your parents live across town or in another city, it might be time for someone, either them or you, to sell your home and move. Even if you don't move in with your parent or have them move in with you, living a little closer together will make it easier for you to properly provide the daily help that they need.
The Neighborhood
Unfortunately, neighborhoods that were great when you moved in may not be as great a decade or two later. If you've found that your current neighborhood is no longer a good fit for your family's needs, it might be time to move somewhere else. For some people, increased crime or unsavory neighbors make their neighborhood a place where they no longer want to live. Even things as simple as school boundary changes or increased local construction may lead to your decision that your neighborhood is no longer a good fit for your family.
Of course, these are just a few of the reasons that people decide that it's time to sell their home and move somewhere else. If you find yourself unsure if it's time to sell, consider these three things as well as how you would solve these three issues if you did move somewhere else.
