When you need help from a company, your first instinct may be to search for its customer service number online. But beware - scammers are manipulating those search results to list fake phone numbers, tricking people into giving away personal or financial information.

This growing scheme is called vishing, or "voice phishing," and it's catching even careful consumers off guard.

How the Scam Works

Fraudsters create fake support pages, ads, or forum posts that appear legitimate. When someone searches online for help with their bank, tech provider, or favorite retailer, the scam number can appear at the top of the results.

Once you call, the scammer pretends to be a support agent. They may ask you to "verify" your identity with account or card numbers, or convince you to install remote-access software under the guise of troubleshooting.

It's a professional-sounding setup - but it's a trap designed to steal your data or drain your accounts.

Example

Tony searched online for his printer company's support number and called what looked like an official line. The "representative" asked for remote access to fix a software issue. Moments later, Tony's computer went dark - and his bank account showed unauthorized withdrawals.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Go straight to the source. Only use contact info from a company's official website or mobile app.

  • Be cautious with urgency. Scammers often pressure you to act quickly. Take a breath before you respond.

  • Never share full account or card details. Legitimate agents won't ask for full numbers or passwords.

  • Don't download or allow remote access unless you've verified the company directly.

  • Bookmark trusted sites so you can skip risky search results.

If You Think You've Been Targeted

  1. Contact your bank immediately — we can help secure your accounts and monitor for fraud.

  2. Report the scam to the FTC  and your state attorney general.

  3. Flag the fake number online to help warn others.

  4. Change passwords and run security scans if you downloaded anything suspicious.

Stay Smart. Stay Secure.

Remember: real customer service will never rush, threaten, or demand sensitive information. When in doubt, hang up and call the number listed on your account statement or the company's verified website.
